Small Groups

by Cheryl AF Okimoto

Care groups, cell groups, life groups, mini-church, these are the small groups, the backbone of the Church. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 12:12-26, compares the body of believers to a human body. It’s often easy to see who’s the head, the hands, the feet. But how do they connect?

In the human body, the brain connects to the rest of the body via the Central Nervous System. Electrical impulses are generated in the brain and then flow from cell to cell until they reach their appropriate destination. This miracle of communication isn’t possible without the protective infrastructure of the skeleton, especially the backbone.

Made up of a series of interconnected small bones, the backbone protects the spinal cord and allows communication to flow to and from the brain. Likewise small groups work for the body of believers. The Church “brain” sends out sermons and lessons which are designed to produce change within the believer. But the desired change doesn’t reach its full potential without the support and accountability of the small group.

At the Island Christian Guide, we want to encourage you to join a small group. Discover its benefits. Grow spiritually. Grow emotionally. Develop lasting and meaningful friendships. To help groups grow, we’ve established a small group data base on our website. If you’d like to list your group, email us at icg@lava.net with the time, area, contact information, and type/subject. If you’re looking for a group, search our data base on our Directories page.
